When an arborist opinion is the right first step
An arborist assessment is worth it when the answer isn't obvious: a tree that has changed after a storm, a construction project that will cut roots, a dispute with a neighbour, an insurance or by-law question, or a mature tree you would rather keep if it can be made safe.
In Ontario, look for an ISA Certified Arborist and, where a written opinion is needed for a permit or claim, ask whether the report will be signed. Any professional attending your property should carry liability insurance and WSIB coverage — ask to see both before work begins.
What an assessment looks at
Species and condition, root zone and soil, trunk and union defects, canopy deadwood, recent changes, and what would be hit if the tree or a part of it failed. That last part — the target — is what turns a defect into a risk rating and drives the recommendation.
