The waterfront strip and the streets just inland get sustained onshore wind that inland Durham doesn't. Shallow-rooted species like Norway maple and blue spruce, planted in compacted subdivision soil, are the ones that tend to lift their root plates in a strong autumn blow.

If you notice the soil cracking or heaving on the side opposite a lean, that is a tree that has already started to fail. It belongs in the urgent category, not the 'we'll get to it in spring' category.

Tight subdivision access

Much of Ajax is 1990s-and-later subdivision: fenced backyards, no rear laneway, and the only route in is a metre-wide side gate. That usually means the tree gets dismantled from the top and everything is carried or roped out to the front, which is a labour question more than a cutting question — and it's the main reason quotes vary between properties that look identical from the street.
